Mind and Space

Man* is made up of mind. The word "man" originated from the ability "to think", which is the capacity of mind. Hence in other languages the root for the word “man” also seems to have similar origination. For example, "manas," which means "mind" in many Indian languages, seems to be the root for the origin of words, "manush" (Sanskrit), "manithan" (Tamil), all of which represent the term “man”. Regardless of when and where the language originated, it is amazing that “man” is represented by the same root which is “mind”.

When “mind” is what makes a man, mind sure does have immense influence on the diverse actions of man. Even in creation of the language, the mind consiously or unconsiously, during such process the mind choose to express certain subtle actions as words, and again regardless of which language, it is very interesting to note that minds choose to maintain the same relationship between the choice of the word and its root. For example, if you say "come" (in English) tell the same in other language "Vaanka" (Tamil) or "Avo" (Hindi), you will find that draw air into your mouth. Similarly, when you speak "go" (English), "po" (Tamil), "Jha" (Hindi) you can experience air being forced out of your mouth. So it is obvious that different languages might have originated as different sounds, but there is a unity in the thought processes involved in generating these languages.

Just as in the creation of language, mind has played very intricate roles in every action, starting from stone age to modern day progression. Although, we might not appreciate this, "mind" seems to perform its action ceaselessly, which means thoughts once initiated may prevail longer even after a man dies! For example, a wish or desire to establish a charity being carried out by many generations of a man. A desire of one mind to fly and control the flight to reach a destination of preference, just like the birds, initiated as a ride in hot air ballon prevailed long enough through many generations of mankind until airplane and rockets were invented. In all these processes, we must realize that it all started with one mind thinking to act for a cause which is to fly, a though that lived through so many generations. Thought is the function of a mind, once initiated is left out in the space (such as, an act of demonstration, or recorded in some physical format or spoken voice), all of which are different modes of communucation that mind uses to transmutate the thoughts. These transmuted thoughts become cognizable, when the next mind that sees it, begins to decode such thoughts left out in space and stores it as memory. Memory is the organic form of the invisible thoughts, and therefore is a product of mind.

Now to answer the question about what is the relationship between mind and space, it is obvious from above descriptions that space play a role in communication as a medim for transmission between minds. Thoughts travel through the space in many forms, just as voices and images of the TV broadcast are not seen as voices and images in the space. But the differences are, the TV broadcast is volatile, so if you miss to capture it in time, you will loose it, but with thoughts, since it has to live longer, it assumes a physical format in the space, so that mind can tap into whenever it needs. Even, if thoughts are decoded by mind from the space, mind preferentially stores the thoughts in a physical format, as we know that memory consolidation involve protein synthesis in the brain.

Why is space so important? Space is dimensionless and timeless. Hard to imagine but it is true. Pondering bit more on it will help you to assimilate this truth. If you imagine that space begins and ends somewhere, then there must be something beyond and after that.

*The term “Man” used here represents human beings both man and women.
